50 not out

A mog milestone was reached today - a half-century of cats are now catalogued for pussy posterity. It had been quiet on the feline scene of late, due in no small part to the foul weather; after a barren few days, I was beginning to fear that winter had driven them all inside and that this blog would stagnate. However, today was a glorious sun-strewn affair and three smashing kits showed themselves, to the delight of this tired old postie, during what's been a long and tough week.

Streetmogs name: Fig roll
Actual name: Poppy
Favourite Location: Lawn
Preferred stroke: n/a
Character: Tease
Other: Fig roll surprised me with his appearance, at a house a mere stone's throw from base, providing a filip to kick-off the day. He was a funny old bean; he trotted around, showing off his oddly shaped (fat) body, and seemed to want a stroke or two, but everytime I approached he sauntered off somewhere else.
Footnote: It's since been established that Fig Roll is a girl called Poppy. She likes her head patted and also responds to "Fatty". Bless!

Streetmog name: Ocelot
Actual name:
Favourite Location: Porch step
Preferred stroke:  Back rub
Character: Tender
Other: Ocelot was a precious thing. She seemed to have an issue with her left leg and couldn't seem to put it down, which made her even more adorable. She looked almost wild, but her character was far from it; cute, inquisitive and most friendly, she was.

Streetmogs name: 50 Cent
Actual name:
Favourite Location: Various garden paths
Preferred stroke: n/a
Character: Independent
Other: Our 50th streetmog, and a worthy specimin he was, although he could have stopped to say hello. This chap had other thoughts on his mind, however, and was not in the mood for any fussing. As soon as he crossed my path, he continued his garden navigation in pursuit of something far more interesting than a postman with a camera.

  1. Hi fig roll is a girl! All tortoiseshell and 'calico' and 3 colour cats are female as the coat colour gene is linked to the x chromosome in tricolour cats. And she needs to go on a diet!
Brilliant blog by the way. Love it. Hilarious. You should write a book - Amazon does self published books.

    1. She probably is - I'm no cat gender expert! Interesting and fun to read your comments though. Glad you like the blog, it's taking off!

  2. Yep, Fig Roll is a girl. There's a chance that tummy bulge isn't fat ...

  3. Just discovered your blog as it was posted by "Under The Paw" on my Facebook news stream. Delightful! I look forward to reading about and seeing more pictures of your beautiful English kitties on your route! From an Arizona kitty lover

  4. My, my. Fig Roll really is quite...rolly. Pretty girl, though. I have found that calicos can be silly little teases. Making you think they want to be petted, then trotting off.

    1. Hey there Gareth

Saw your article in the Guardian yesterday so thought I would check out the blog, as I love finding all the kitties in my local area.

Also; I live in the house next door to Fig Roll! Couldn't believe it when I saw her in the paper yesterday. I've been calling her Jaffa Cake, though. I will try and give the newspaper article to her owners and find out her real name.

You are correct about her temprement. She rolls around on the ground like she wants a pat, but then walks away when you try. I've found, though, that if you be patient and let her come to you she is very friendly and will hang around a long time letting you pat and play with her. There is a brown cat that lives at the house too, but I've only seen it once or twice and it is very shy.

    2. Hi! So great to read your comment - it's brought a wide grin to my face. If you live next door to Fig Roll/Jaffa Cake (LOVE your name and I think it suits her better!) then you're probably sick of postmen and their van noise... Anyway, so funny that you've experienced the same behaviour with this now famous (in certain circles) cat. Let me know her real name if you find it, and I'll look out for the brown one too. I never knew cats/blogs could attract so much interest - it's great fun. Best wishes!

  7. No Facebook account (and no plans right now) as the blog is enough but I use Twitter @streetmogs to announce new mog posts!

  8. 50 Cent is also a girl and we love her but she's always so timid and runs away quickly - amazed you managed to capture her! Our name for her is Felicity Kitten.

  11. I never knew fig roll was so famouse. She has an amazing character and is extremely friendly but can be a tease.

Her real name is Poppy as she turned up on Rememberance Sunday however she also responds to the name Fatty. She has an amazing ability to keep her weight despite years worth of dieting.

She likes strokes on the top of her head.

Thank you for your great blog.

  12. So lovely to see your comment and to learn that you're Fig Roll (Poppy's) owner! So funny that she responds to fatty even though that seems mean! I've only ever seen her once but will keep looking out for her and I'll come and say hello one day.
Best wishes and glad you enjoy the blog.

  13. Hello Gareth, I'm another member of Fig roll's family; let's hope I can get through this without any spelling errors, or is 'famouse' a feline fantasy? I really wish you and the neighbours had been around when we named Poppy because I prefer Fig roll and Jaffa cake although, to be fair, she wasn't rotund in those days; she piled the weight on after she became a mother. We kept one kitten, 'Kitty' (sorry, I'm obviously burnt out when it comes to naming)and yes, she is shy but who wouldn't be with a mother like hers. I'm glad Poppy gets on well with you and the neighbours; you are all welcome to drop by and say hello to Poppy. P.S. Do you think I should ask for my money back for the rather costly dietary product she has?

    1. Hi Alison,
I love this! Thanks for your message and for the inside scoop on Poppy. And my son Ben thinks that 'Kitty' is a great name! I certainly plan to pop by one day and say hello, especially if I see cats! :D

  14. Well... Fig Roll / Jaffa Cake really is quiet the socialite it seems; she's always been a character but we never expected to see her make the local paper! A few years ago, she would have lured you closer and then having rolled on her back started to chew your hand before running up the nearest tree.

I'm also a member of the Fig Roll clan and wanted to give you a bit more backgrond.

It's nice to see her turn up on a postie's blog especially given the following: she turned up just before the weekend of Remembrance Sunday 2006, calmly walking up the garden path and into the house as if there was nothing of it, she had a sniff around and that was that, home sweet home. The vet reckoned she was about a year old at the time. We are not sure exactly where she came from, no ID chip, no one responded to the posters we put up; but we have a theory... she loves getting into things, boxes being a favourite, and often used to happily jump in the car whenever we tried to leave. Given the proximity of the sorting office (and a now confirmed affection for postmen!) we believe that she may have turned up in the area in the back of one of a post van! Maybe she watched too much postman pat in her youth. Kitty was her other little suprise for us!

We called her Poppy because she turned up around Remembrance Sunday.

The belly is as stubborn as it's owner... we suspect she has other friends, or kitchens at least, where she may frequent for the odd snack. Maybe she's developed a taste for Fig Rolls or Jaffa Cake :)

    Thanks for the excellent Blog!!!

    1. Will, it's great to read your message and learn even more about Poppy. Thanks so much for taking the time to write. I think she should earn star status and become the queen cat of the blog with a masthead photo or something...! And I'll not feed her snacks if our paths cross again ;)
      Keep enjoying the blog,
      best wishes,
      Gareth
